Restless Legs Syndrome

An irresistible urge to move the legs, especially at rest and in the evening.

Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor disorder characterized by an uncomfortable urge to move the legs, typically worse at rest and in the evening/night, temporarily relieved by movement. It significantly impairs sleep onset and quality. Iron deficiency (even with normal hemoglobin) is strongly associated with RLS, as iron is essential for dopamine synthesis in the substantia nigra. Ferritin levels below 50-75 ng/mL are considered a treatable cause. Supplemental iron (ferrous bisglycinate preferred for tolerability) and magnesium may improve symptoms in deficient individuals.
