NSF International (formerly National Sanitation Foundation) provides third-party certification for dietary supplements through two programs: NSF/ANSI 173 (general supplements) and NSF Certified for Sport (athletic supplements tested for banned substances). NSF certification involves product testing, manufacturing facility inspection, and ongoing monitoring. The Certified for Sport program is particularly important for competitive athletes, as it tests for over 280 substances banned by major sports organizations (WADA, MLB, NFL, PGA).
