Garcinia Cambogia
herbalAlso known as: Hydroxycitric Acid (HCA), Garcinia gummi-gutta, Malabar Tamarind, Brindleberry
About
A tropical fruit extract containing hydroxycitric acid (HCA) that has been widely marketed for weight loss. However, Cochrane reviews and the landmark JAMA trial found evidence to be equivocal at best, and hepatotoxicity concerns have been reported in multi-ingredient products.
How It Works
Hydroxycitric acid (HCA) inhibits ATP-citrate lyase, the enzyme that converts citrate to acetyl-CoA for de novo fatty acid synthesis. Also increases hepatic glycogen synthesis, which may suppress appetite via glucoreceptor signaling in the brain. Serotonergic effects may further reduce appetite and emotional eating.

Drug & Supplement Interactions

- SSRIs (theoretical serotonergic interaction)
